Atlas of The North American Indian Carl Waldman 9780816068593 Books Reviews
- I find this book to be useful as an introductory guide to North American Indian cultures for students. It is not a detailed history book on them nor does it pretend to be. What it is, is a collection of facts about these cultures so that people who are interested can begin their explorations of these cultures. It contains a great deal of information including some data on contemporary issues. As a general reference the book is valuable. There is some good history here, but it is a condensed version. Useful as a starting point, but not deep enough to really deliver more than a cursory explanation.
With all that in mind, the book still is quite useful in showing students the basics of Native American cultures. Many students have little idea of these cultures beyond what theyĆ¢€™ve seen in films which is often highly distorted. This book explains the movements of the tribes, the way the various people interacted with one another, and the way they lived. It does give a brief look at pre-Columbian societies and then moves into the destruction contact with Europeans wrought in such a short time.
A timeline of events is included along with a list of native nations, place-names, museums, historical sites, and a glossary. A bibliography is also provided which is really a good thing to have for students who are looking for additional information. This is a book that I used in two college courses and it was helpful to a degree. Were I teaching a course on Native American history I could use this book to supplement others. As such I do recommend reading it for students who are interested in learning about Native American cultures. I also think it is a good reference book for the US history survey courses which often push Native Americans to the wayside. - This is very valuable source book for an amateur student of Native Americans. . When Europeans and their descendants started recording their contacts with different tribes, they were dealing with groups that were always is some state of flux. With over 500 existing tribes in the U.S. alone at this time, a reference to a particular tribe at a particular place and time can be more than a little confusing. Tribes were expanding and contracting, merging and splitting into smaller groups, taking more desirable land from neighboring peoples or being forced to migrate by more powerful neighbors. This had been going on for thousands of years before the white men came and recorded their observations and recorded the oral traditions of the tribes they encountered.
I am in the midst of reading an biography of Tecumseh. The Shawnees had had three migrations forced by powerful neighbors in the 200 years that white people had been in contact with them. Then came the forced exile of the eastern Tribes to west of the Mississippi.
Carl Waldman steps steps into this vast arena and organizes a great deal of information in one volume. He deals with the ancient cultures and the major cultural groups that existed and still exist. He provides maps that show a lot of information in a easily comprehended page. The Chapter on Indian Wars is a particularly good reference piece.

Tulsa, Oklahoma - This book is amazing! Great information! In the past, I sponsored two Indian children, through the Christian Children's Fund. I found it fascinating to learn how many tribes there are, and about their reservations.
- This will be an excellent teaching aid as I begin a course on the Indian Wars this fall. It is concise, easily readable, and comprehensive. Very good work.
- Well done history with plenty of maps, good text and appendixes listing both the historic tribes and current locations. The book is divided into several sections which cover historical eras. Well worth it and an improvement on the previous edition.
- Delivered exactly as described. Definitely helped me with my coursework and would buy again if I needed to.
- Easy to read and interesting, I was reading chapters ahead of where we were in class and continued reading past the required pages. It really sucks you in and holds your attention. Loved it!
- I bought this book as a present for my son. He is enjoying it very much. It is very informative regarding Indian tribes and their migration.
